Thursday, December 14 - 6:30pm Join labor, environmental and social justice activists for a showing of the award winning film A Forest For The Trees: Judy Bari v. the FBI followed by a discussion about state repression. Judi Bari was union organizer and an Earth First! activist who was bombed then charged with terrorism by the FBI. She sued the FBI and eventually won the case. Her story, her struggle and her victory against the FBI exposed government complacency and collaboration in the repression of environmental and labor activists. Part of the International Days of Solidarity with Defendants December 7th is the one-year anniversary of the beginning of "operation backfire" and the wave of repression against environmental activists now referred to as the "Green Scare". Join us in Providence for the film showing and discussion about repression and resistance. Sponsored by Ocean State Earth First!, Providence Chapter IWW & Mass Direct Action More information about the film: The Forest for the Trees is a look at an unlikely team of young activists and old civil rights workers who come together to battle the U.S. government. The filmmaker Bernadine Mellis is the daughter of 68-year-old civil rights lawyer Dennis Cunningham who was Judi Bari's lawyer. Dennis started out his career representing the Black Panthers and the Weathermen. Mellis' mother was active in the Weather Underground. Judi Bari was an Earth First! leader who was one of the first to place as much importance on timber workers' lives and families as she did on the legacy and future of the trees. But that strategic relationship was too much of a threat. Her car was bombed in 1990, and three hours later, she was arrested as a terrorist. Convinced it was a ploy by the FBI to discredit her Judi decided to sue. The Forest for the Trees offers access into the painfully short yet extraordinary life of Judi Bari, and a piece of U.S. history that grows increasingly resonant as the lines between dissent and terrorism are intentionally blurred.
