Rod Coronado

On February 22, 2006, Native American environmental activist and former Animal Liberation Front (ALF) prisoner Rodney Adam Coronado, 39, was indicted in California on one felony charge of demonstrating how to use a destructive device. He is accused of demonstrating at a lecture how he constructed a crude incendiary device out of a plastic can and gasoline for the arson of a fur-researchers laboratory in the 1990's for which he was convicted and had served time in prison. If convicted of this new charge, he faces up to 25 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine. His counsel maintains that this is a free speech issue (Rod was responding to a question at a university lecture in 2003). He is currently incarcerated in Arizona and is scheduled to be released on March 23, 2007.

Rod still has 3 cases awaiting him. He is appealing the charges of sabotaging the Sabino Mountain Lion hunt, even though he has served the time. For him, it is a matter of protecting those who in the future wish to engage in acts of civil disobedience. The government is also charging him with possession of eagle and raptor feathers, though being a Yacqui, the feathers are part of his heritage and tradition.

Rod and his supporters have a long, costly legal battle ahead of them and are seeking donations.
